Officer Collar Insignia
Can someone explain this strange insignia on a marine?
I was in WalMart a couple of years ago, and I saw a Marine in a OD dress uniform with an insignia that consisted of a propeller with one petty officer chevron below it, all embroidered in black. I think there may have been a straight line embroidered above the propeller. I don’t remember seeing any collar or shoulder insignia. The guy was young, and had a short, cropped haircut, but didn’t look especially “squared away.” Was he in flight training?
Thank you for playing, but I know what most U.S. military uniforms look like. The guy I saw had an olive drab Marine uniform on. I know the Marine Corps doesn’t have petty officers, except the Naval Corpsmen assigned to them, who, I know, wear Navy uniforms and insignia. He even had one of those marksmanship badges on. Could he have been in some kind of JROTC or ROTC?
1) Marines do not have Petty Officers, that is the Navy or Coast Guard.
2) He wouldn’t have any insignia like that on his uniform if he is in ODs, even in the Navy they have dungarees/utilities which at that time were a light blue shirt/dark blue pants with Rating (job) on the shoulder. With the Rating on his shoulder that is his Rate (Rank) so therefore nothing would be on the collar at all.
3) He wouldn’t be in flight training because that “propeller” means he was a Machinist Mate and he would be an E4 with 1 chevron.
