German SS officers wearing their hats to the side?
I’m hoping a third reich expert can help me on this, but I was looking through some old portraits of SS officers and I noticed a lot of them wear their hats tipped to the side, or slightly askew, but rarely straight, like a military hat should properly be worn. I even saw a photo of General Rommel doing this. What does it mean when they do that? Is that their way of saying “I break the rules sometimes, that makes me a bad***.”?
In a way you are right, there were different branches of the SS but they had one thing in common, they were not a formal part of the traditional German military, they wanted to demonstrate that they were apart from the spit-and-polish Wehrmacht. This is not true of all SS officers, obviously, and they were expected to be as polished as any Guards officer when on parade in dress uniform. When a uniform hat of the kind you are describing is worn continuously in battlefield conditions it will lose its shape, become battered and stained by the elements, younger or less battle-experienced officers would, like some soldiers the world over, try to give the impression that they too were battle-hardened veterans.
btw Rommel was not a SS officer.
