The invasion at Normandy was planned from the beginning as an operation using Patton as the decoy at Calais. The invasion of 1066 was very much in the minds of the planners as most were students of military history. Patton was one of these as was Montgomery, Eisenhower etc. What made the ruse effective was the German desire to get Patton for his victories in North Africa against Rommel. Once the information was leaked, the Germans moved their defenses towards Calais drawing their reserves away from Normandy. Normandy, still was a bloody affair with many casualties and some really stupid moves from the Allies…….historians sometimes wonder how we won that battle.
