In WWII era, what planes were crews allowed to paint nose art on?
I’ve seen a lot of artwork on bombers and some on fighters in the WWII and Korean years. So was anybody allowed to paint on their planes? I haven’t seen that much artwork on fighters, and I’ve never seen any art on RAF planes.
All US planes deployed for combat could have nose art. I have never seen any training aircraft with nose art. Much of the nose art was of the Vargas Girl collection. For a period during WWII, Walt Disney sent many of his artists to paint nose art on bombers prior to their deployment.
I was with the Confederate Air Force (now the Commemorative Air Force) for many years. You may find some good pictures of nose art from their aircraft collection and their nose art gallery. Look up “American Heritage Aircraft Museum” or “Commemorative Air Force”.
